Making my business online much more effective

So, I took the plunge in mid to late 2020 to get involved in the online lead gen business. I had been watching my peers in the mortgage biz kill it and I wanted a piece of the online clientele. So, I hired a company and spent a lot of money, thousands and thousands of dollars, and guess what? It didn't work and I was so frustrated till I met Will on a zoom call. I left teaching and started my own tutoring “business.” Except I didn’t have any idea of how to run a business. I was a self-employed tutor.

I was doing fine money wise, but I was literally killing myself. I was doing 40 hours of tutoring a week, and then 40 doing all the follow up, prep work, and other business tasks. It was adversely affecting my health, and I had pretty much 0 personal life.

I was a mess. I have really high standards, which is one of the reasons I had a lot of organic growth and referrals. But I didn’t have time to actually work “on” the business. Everything was disorganized, the quality of my instruction was going down, and I was dropping leads all the time.

I wanted to grow and help more students, but I didn’t see how that was possible. I knew there was demand, but I didn’t know how to generate new leads when I needed them, nothing was systematic, and I couldn’t imagine a life where I wasn’t working 80+ hours a week.

Fortunately, one of my best clients said I should look at getting some help in growing the business. A “business tutor” of sorts. He recommended Will Dukes with SalesPartners, who he had worked with before.

It’s now a year later, and I can honestly say that everything has changed. Will was able to help me with my time management and allocation (probably the biggest thing), but also raising my rates, and changing my business model to generate more revenue and hire associate tutors.

Our biggest project was the creation of an SAT Math prep course. He helped me structure the course offering, and pushed me through some of my self-imposed limits on pricing, define a marketing and lead management program that worked with my existing workflows, and provided me some specific sales training to help me convert more leads.

I love having him almost “on call” to help me with prospect and client communications and answer quick questions between our consultations. But the biggest thing is that he helps keep me focused on MY goals, and what I am trying to accomplish.

In the last year, I’ve been able to raise my personal hourly tutoring rate 66% to over $100 an hour. We doubled monthly revenue, and now we are running twice the classes at twice the size, and have increased monthly revenue 6X. My conversion rate has also been ridiculous – pretty close to 99%.

And even though I’m on track to break $250,000 in 2021, the biggest results for me have been that I have dropped personal tutoring from 40 hours a week down to 10, direct clients to my new associates, and can now take 2 days off every week.

The financial stability I have now is empowering. But,the thing that ultimately brings me the most peace of mind, is the confidence I have in my business skills now. I could start any number of businesses to support my lifestyle. And that security is so much better than any “job security.”

After the first session my guys was able to successfully apply what Will taught

As a general contractor, we already start the sales process behind the eight ball because of all the shady practices that go on in our industry. One thing I am sure of is that we have to be able to effectively differentiate ourselves from our competition, but that’s hard to do when you’re just taking measurements and sending bids. You can’t just tell homeowners that you’re the best, or honest, or anything else, because everyone else says the same thing. I had sent my guys to other sales training classes before, but they did not like it. They said they felt “dirty”, using some of the things they were taught, and so they haven’t been doing anything different.

I brought SalesPartners in because I had heard Will speak and the philosophy he used to describe business and sales as a way to serve people really resonated with me. Turns out it resonated with my guys, too. Will took the time to understand our whole business model and marketing process, and helped me narrow down on specific parts of our sales process that he could effectively address in our training sessions, rather than just a generic high level overview. He could probably use some lessons on neater flip-chart writing and drawing, but his passion for everyone adding value really made an impact on me and my guys.

Our first session was largely about developing trust and empathy with the prospective customer. You actually have to do it. I’ve built a successful law firm, and Will Dukes has been helping me for several years with quarterly reviews of our marketing and sales processes. However, as we have grown and added several associates, my partner and I noticed that one area we could improve in to increase referrals and repeat business as well as collections was to improve the level of interaction those associates had with our clients.

Beyond some helpful techniques in diffusing emotional situations, one of the greatest things Will was able to impress on the team was that the mission of the firm is to serve our clients in their legal problems in a profitable exchange. ...Five Deals from Inquiry to Closing within 90 Days!

2018 was a great year in my business - but it scared me. I wanted to send a newsletter back in January and realized I didn't have an accurate database of contacts, which led me to realize that my sales "process" was very passive and reactive.
